Small gradual changes are definitely okay, yes. They almost certainly happen in “natural” conditions.
To wake up near sunrise, a lot of people try sleeping with their blinds open, so that sleeping in too long does not delay their internal clock as much the next night. The sun is really a natural alarm clock, but it also has the side-effect of synchronizing your internal clock to the same time (rather than just making loud noises in the morning).
